Matlab Essentials and Image Processing

Instructors:  Dr. Jon Johansson and Denise Thornton, Videre Analytics Ltd.

Description: This hands-on workshop presents the essential principles of Matlab usage followed by methods for working with images. We will start with an overview of Matlab, then we will discuss techniques used in Image Processing and Analysis.

We will begin with a brief introduction to Matlab, includingImageAwMatlabworkshopsideimages

  • Matlab interface components
  • Variable types
  • Matlab scripts (m-files)
  • Matrices and arrays
  • Functions
  • Convolutions

We will then work with images using techniques including

  • Histograms
  • Thresholding
  • Filter operations
  • Binary and morphological operations
  • Discussion of 3D analysis as time permits

Participants will be programming in Matlab to solve a variety of problems. Some programming experience is recommended for this course.

Who should attend? Researchers with an interest in numerical data analysis and image processing/analysis.

The venue is a computer lab and the machines are powerful enough to do the exercises. You are welcome to bring your own laptop and use it for the exercises. If you are bringing your own laptop you will need to have Matlab and the Image Processing Toolbox installed. You will need to have a UofA CCID to access the lab machines and the campus network.

This workshop is provided by the Mechanical Engineering Graduate Students’ Association at the University of Alberta.
